The nearest airport is Inverness, which is approximately 70 miles away, or around an hour and a half by car. Flights are available from London Heathrow, Gatwick or Luton, Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham, Belfast, Dublin, Jersey, Amsterdam, Orkney, Shetland and The Outer Hebrides. A larger, more international, airport is available in Aberdeen, but this is quite a bit further away, at 160 miles from Slumbay House, or around three and half hours by car.
The Caledonian Sleeper https://www.sleeper.scot, the overnight train service from London, terminates at Inverness from where it is straightforward to rent a car for the onward journey.
Alternatively, you could then transfer to the local Kyle of Lochalsh train and get off at Strathcarron (www.scotrail.co.uk). There you will be met by a local bus that will drop you off within walking distance of the house (or, if you ask the driver nicely, in front of the gate). See here for the local bus timetable. Please note, however, that public transport locally is very limited and that, without access to a car during your stay, the range of activities open to you will be much smaller.
If you are driving from the south, it is about five hours -- from either Glasgow or Edinburgh. The east coast A9 route is quicker, but the west coast route via Glen Coe, Fort William and the famous “Five Sisters” is more attractive.
Upon arrival, you will need to obtain the key to the house. One set of keys is provided in a key safe local to the property. The location and access code to the key safe will be provided by email prior to arrival.
The address of the house is:
There is well-stocked local shop in the village, about ten minutes’ walk from the house. This also operates one of the two petrol stations in the village. The other one is at Lochcarron Garage, but this does not operate on Sundays. There is also one in Applecross.
Tesco also delivers locally! You can order online at https://www.tesco.com. If you book the delivery slot between 11.00am and 1.00pm on the Saturday of your arrival, we will happily receive your order and put it away in the kitchen. However, if you want to take advantage of this, please don’t leave it to the last minute to place your order as that is a popular slot that becomes unavailable very quickly!
Please note that the tap water is safe to drink.
